It’s a classic Australian household experience – late at night, you hear something scampering about above your ceiling.

You wonder: Is there a possum in the roof?

There’s a good chance the answer is yes. Possums are nocturnal creatures native to Australia, and the increasing sprawl of urbanisation means their natural habitats are being encroached upon.

This means they are being found in more and more domestic environments. And since they are highly territorial creatures, if you find one in your roof, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of.

Possum problems? Don’t panic.

If you find a possum on your property, there is no need to panic. Remember, these creatures are only trying to survive and deal with their increasingly limited natural habitat.

Controlling possums around the home

In the meantime, there are steps you can take to ensure possums are kept away from your home, including:

Pruning overhanging branches to ensure there is no easy access between trees and your roof.

Sealing any gaps or openings in your roof or eaves.

Keeping rubbish bins closed and ensuring food is not left lying around; basically, eliminating potential food sources.

Keeping the affected area well lit, as these nocturnal creatures do not enjoy light.

This possum is mostly grey to black with red/brown tinges, white to red/brown below with pale patches below the eyes and ears and it has a long white tipped hairless tail. They are nocturnal and will make a racquet in your roof at night when you are trying to sleep.

They are not considered dangerous however they should not be approached or fed. If you hear noises in your roof at night call KR Pest Control, we will safely catch the possum and release it to a safe environment. Once captured we can repair any access holes to ensure the possum does not return.

This species is native to Australia and is not to be harmed or fed rodent bait.

This possum varies in color from silver-grey to black and off-white below. Its tail is brushy with a naked area below the tip. They are much larger than the ringtailed possum. These possum are nocturnal and will make loud noises hissing and thumping in your roof at night.
